May 20, 2015 – Sackville Sportwheels Wolves 4 vs Halifax Northwest Marley Lions 15

After two disappointing losses at the hands of the Dartmouth Bandits, the Northwest Lions had to make a statement heading into an eight-game stretch without playing either of the top echelon teams in the Bandits and Hurricanes. That message was sent loud and clear with a decisive win over the Wolves.

Not to be discounted, the Wolves showed grit on defence, and were only down by five goals after the 2nd period. Rookies Connor Aquanno and Mitch Battiste lead the charge for the Wolves. Aquanno has been a pleasant surprise as a rookie in his first year of Junior action, with 10 points in 4 games. Battiste has also providing size on the floor for the young Wolves.

Top playmakers for the Lions were Gavin Quigley and John MacDonald. The duo combined for 14 points on the night and scored almost half of the teams goals in the contest. Reports from Lions coaching staff put shots for at roughly 82, leaving Dan Hubley with a .818 save percentage on the evening.

The Lions defence and goaltender Pat Keats had a bounce-back game, shutting the opponents down the second they hit the restraining line.

Aside from the third period, the Wolves showed significant potential. Their defence and goaltending showed signs of life, and the return of Robbie Grant, who is coming back from a shoulder injury, will provide a spark to the club entering Week 4.

Players to Watch:

For the Wolves, continue to monitor the progress of Dan Hubley down the stretch. He has been the backbone of a club competing for the fourth and final playoff spot for the GK Cup, and will be a big reason for their success should they make it.

Lions Transition player Riley Ambrose has shown promise since coming over in a blockbuster trader with the Southwest Hurricanes. Ambrose was scarcely mentioned in the deal that sent Cole Davis to the Hurricanes, but his performance has been valuable for the Lions.

May 21, 2015 – Moncton Mavericks 4 vs Mi’kmaq Warriors 14

After a low-scoring 7-3 win at the Kay Arena in Moncton to start their season, the Mi’kmaq Warriors left no doubt in Truro on Thursday night. The Mavericks only had 11 runners for the contest, making it difficult to keep up with Billie Julians run-and-gun style of play. Julian had 5 goals and 6 assists, propelling him into the lead ECJLL scoring race.

Bryson Knockwood tallied 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points while team leader Graydon Thomas added 6 points for the Warriors who were able to get their first win in front of a home crowd.

After a spirited win over the Sackville Sportwheels Wolves in Week 2, the Mavericks simply weren’t able to get anything going offensively. Jon Magarvey added one goal and one assists on an otherwise empty scoresheet. Despite scoring first one minute in, the Warriors scored 8 straight, making it hard for a short bench to keep up offensively.

It’s evident that the Mavericks are going to have to win games at home if the hope to see their play last past the end of the regular season. Geographically the Mavericks are at a disadvantage on the road, so fully expect the team to play their best at home in New Brunswick.

This game was a far cry from the rough and spirited battle that took place the week prior in Truro, and mark down the Warriors upcoming battle with the Sackville Wolves on June 2nd as one of the more intriguing matchups in the coming weeks.

Players to Watch:

The Magarveys have been putting up a good amount of the points for the Mavericks so far in 2015. John has lead the team with 8 points and Jesse has 5. Look for these two, paired with Tyler Saunders to make plays down the stretch.

It’s hard not to mention Billie Julian as a player to watch. His style of play demands attention as he makes difficult plays look routine through the middle of the floor and offensively. The best test for Julian will come in Week 4 as the Warriors battle the Lions and Bandits.

May 22, 2015 – Halifax Southwest Hurricanes 14 vs Dartmouth Bandits 9

The Marquee matchup of the week had both teams doing everything they could for the W in a contest between the top two seeds early in this 2015 ECJLL season.

Both teams were cautious early on, flip-flopping the lead back and forth through the first two periods. It wasn’t until 6:55 into the second period where both teams were sparked by a fight between Nathan Allen and Nick Simpson. The Hurricanes rallied hard behind Allen’s show of force and scored a quick goal but a second tilt between Nile Cyr and defenceman Peter Drohan had Dartmouth responding with two goals of their after another quick one by Southwest.

In the final frame the Hurricanes dominated, lead by Max McBride, Sam Martin, and Brian Huyghue, who scored or assisted on all seven goals in the third period. This third period was much different than those played against the Northwest Lions for the Bandits, who held the Lions under 10 goals per game in both matchups a week prior.

Trey Carvery netted 4 goals for the Bandits, whose offence was uncharacteristically flat-footed. Credit to the Canes D and goaltender Matt Kent for giving the offence every opportunity to close this one out.

As mentioned, McBride, Martin, and Huyghue littered the scoresheet for a combined 20 points. In our 6 Teams 6 Weeks Team Preview the big question heading into this season was who would replace the scoring from the big three on last year’s squad, and I think we’ve found our answer.

Players to Watch:

Trey Carvery has been a force on both sides of the ball for the Bandits so far in 2015. Looking like a man amongst boys, his physical style of play has intimidated certain opponents through the middle of the floor, and his offensive spark in transition has given the Bandits a lift in these early games.

Through five games and already matching his 2014 goal total of 15, Max McBride has let his play do the talking in the ECJLL scoring race. Many players rack up points against weaker opponents, but McBride has been able to put up a hat trick against the Lions in the season opener and now 4 goals against Dartmouth. Expect the ECJLL points race to heat up between McBride, Billie Julian, and Lions product John MacDonald in the coming weeks.

May 23, 2015 – Halifax Northwest Marley Lions 17 vs Moncton Mavericks 6

In their first matchup of the season, the Marley Lions made it look easy on the Mavericks floor on Saturday afternoon in Moncton.

The first two periods were highlighted by great passing from the Lions and a solid play on both ends of the floor. In the first two periods the Mavericks had trouble adjusting to the Lions style of play, but limited them to only 3 goals in the final period.

Jon Magarvey lead the team on the scoresheet as he has done often in 2015, netting 3 G 1 A. For the Lions, Chris Walker’s powerful shot from the left side finally paid dividends has he potted 4 goals, and Gavin Quigley and Paddy Quinn followed suit with 3 goals a piece.

Lions defenders were especially stout on this day, rarely letting the Mavericks inside the 25 foot circle, and promptly slid in the rare occurrence. Through the first three weeks of the season the Lions are one of four teams who have allowed less than 40 goals through these games, a testament to the athletic play of defenders, and the quality of goaltending in the league.

A real testament of this game will be to see how both teams rebound in their upcoming matchup in Week 4 on 5/31.

Players to Watch:

Jon Magarvey has continued to find his way to the top of the scoresheet, and expect nothing less this season.

Lions product and Eastern Shore Breakers alum Justin Misener has slowly seen his playing time increase on offence and in transition over the course of this season, and his results on the game sheet have steadily improved. His outside shot has the potential to be one of the best on the team, it’s simply a matter of him finding his spots to let it loose.

May 24 – Halifax Southwest Hurricanes 9 vs Moncton Mavericks 4

After a win against top-level opponents Dartmouth Bandits, the Southwest Hurricanes were looking to separate themselves by a wide margin from the rest of the field, unfortunately in this game that did not happen. After taking a beating at the hands of the Halifax Northwest Lions a day earlier, the Mavericks clearly adjusted to the Nova Scotian style of play from Saturday after sitting out the 2014 season.

Offensively, Maxwell McBride was held in check only scoring one goal and adding two assists. Reilly Letterick led the charge for the Hurricanes, scoring three goals and adding one assist. Goaltender Jake Nordin was solid in nets only allowing Moncton four goals, albeit on limited opportunities.

The Mavericks can consider this loss margin a building block going forward in the 2015 season. Coach Wallace has work to do with this group, but watching them play there is clearly room for improvement with scoring potential from many different players.

Player to Watch:

Reilly Letterick has the left-side crease position locked down for the hurricanes, and look for him to do more from that position should McBride’s scoring pace slow at all.
