Week One Summary
East Coast Junior Lacrosse League

May 12, 2015

May 4, 2015 – Halifax Northwest Marley Lions 9 vs Halifax Southwest Hurricanes 6

A rematch for game one of the ECJLL season pitting last year’s Garnet Knight finalists, this game left much to be desired on the score sheet. Both teams showed rust early on, with only nine total goals scored in the first two periods.

After back and forth goals for most of the game the Lions finally produced in the third period outpacing the Hurricanes four goals to two in the final frame to take the game by a final of 9-6.

Predictably, John MacDonald and Paddy Quinn led the way offensively for the Lions, combining for 8 points. Meanwhile, Left side tandem Chris Walker and Clark Hannam combined for 3 goals (all from Walker) and 3 assists (all from Hannam).

For the Hurricanes, Max McBride had the team in this one. His outside shot kept the Canes within striking distance for much of the game. Ian Donovan controlled the right side of the offence with 2 goals and 2 assists, and rookie Alex Pace proved his worth in his first junior game with 3 assists.

In a matchup between two favourites for the GK Cup this year, both teams came out flat. Both were missing key players on offence attending school elsewhere. Each team’s inability to move the ball on offence made both defences look strong, and powerplays from both teams will need to improve as the season progresses.

Players to watch:

Alex Pace was mostly contained by the Marley Lions defence, but that didn’t stop him from getting on the scoresheet. With Brian Huyghue returning expect the heat to ease on Pace, and expect him to see his points total rise steadily throughout the season.

The Lions defence was a strong point, and Dan MacEachern had a lot to do with it. MacEachern and team leader Keith Langille will be tasked with locking down the opponents best players, and both will need to be stout every week to keep opposing teams in check.

May 8, 2015 – Sackville Wolves 5 vs Dartmouth Bandits 14

The young Wolves looked to open the season with a bang in the Bandits’ house on Friday night, but fell flat-footed in a rough game keeping the scorekeepers busy. Rare was a 5-5 point in this game.

The Bandits offence was propelled by Nile Cyr and their defence was undoubtedly led by hard-hitting Tre Carvery who landed big hit after big hit throughout this game.

While both teams have a lot of work to do in transition and breaking out of their own end, this led to a rhythmic back and forth style of play, witnessed both by fans in attendance and those live-streaming online through Bell Community One.

While Wolves goaltender Dan Hubley made a significant amount of breakaway saves, it was not enough to slow the Bandits. On offence, the team failed to reach the middle of the floor with Dartmouth’s well-sized defensive unit simply too much for the young group.

#1 ECJLL Entry Draft pick Connor Aquanno had a nice goal for the Wolves, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise sloppy game. Through this first week it is evident that every team has work to do heading into the rest of the season.

Players to watch:

Greg Nussey had a solid showing in this first game with 3 goals and 3 assists. After finishing with 36 points (18 goals 18 assists) in 2014, Nussey should benefit from increased floor time due to the loss of Connor Lebans and Breton Penney still away at school to start the season.

Connor Aquanno will fit nicely into the Wolves offence in his first year, and it will be interesting to see how he warms up to the physical play at the Junior level. Philip Morrison had two goals for the Wolves and will be relied upon to light the lamp often throughout the season

May 9, 2015 – Mi’kmaq Warriors 7 vs Moncton Mavericks 3

The Mi’kmaq Warriors played, and won their inaugural game in a matchup between the expansion Warriors and re-established Moncton Mavericks.

After indicating during the preseason they would be relying heavily on players such as Billie Julian and Julien Hepworth, Birthday boy Coach Chet Koneczny was showered with gifts in the form of goals from the two, with Julian notching 5 goals and 1 assist and Julien Hepworth adding another 2 goals and one assist.

With only 13 runners, the Mavericks left much to be desired on the floor. The Warriors came in with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude that put them over the edge in the first of hopefully many wins for the club.

In a low scoring affair, similar to other scores this week, Moncton came within one at one point. Billie Julian took over for the Warriors from there scoring four unanswered goals in a span of eight minutes.

Goal scorers for the Mavericks were Dylan Fyfe and Tyler Saunders, each with one goal and one assist.

Players to watch:

Though he didn’t make a major impact on the score-sheet in this one, expect solid production on defence from Warriors captain and former Sackville Wolves player Graydon Thomas. Leading a team needing to forge an identity in a top heavy ECJLL standing.

For the Mavericks, expect Jesse Magarvey to play a more significant role in future games, coming off 28 points (8 goals, 20 assists) in the 2013 ECJLL season.

May 10, 2015 – Sackville Wolves 6 vs Moncton Mavericks 7

Hoping to benefit from home-court advantage with the Wolves travelling up to Moncton, the Mavericks did just enough to squeak by the Wolves and even their record to 1-1, while the Wolves fall to 0-2.

The third period was filled with unnecessary penalties and that may have cost the Wolves in the end as the Mavericks outscored them 5-3 in the third period, after having a 3-2 after two periods.

Ryan Arsenault was a bright spot for the Wolves, potting 4 goals and adding an assist. Wolves coaches were singing his praises following the Metro High School lacrosse tournament, and it’s apparent he is one of the players being relied upon this year, even at such a young age.

Dan Hubley received a shelling from the Mavericks, and as coach Titchmarsh mentioned in our 6 Teams 6 Weeks preview of the Wolves, they will rely as much or more on his services in net as they did last season.

Players to watch:

As mentioned, expect Ryan Arsenault to continue to put the ball in the net. His style of play is similar to great players that have come through the Wolves organization in the past, and coach Titcmarsh would do well to model the play of younger players after his.

As previously mentioned, Jesse Magarvey picked up his play with 4 points (3 G 1 A). Expect more from him when they travel up to take on the Warriors, Lions, and Hurricanes in two weeks’ time.
