Week in review May 19-25

2012-05-29

After a 6 day break in the season schedule, the Northwest Rebels and Southwest Hurricanes looked to treat the fans to another game of fast-paced, high-flying action.

On this night, the Hurricanes were able to control the action early and often as Southwest out-scored Northwest in all three periods to win the game 8-4. The three Martin brothers had strong individual performances for the Hurricanes as Louis paced all scorers with 4 points (2G, 2A) while big brother Joe had another strong performance between the pipes. The X factor of the game seemed to be the Rebels’ offence as they looked to be out of sync without leading scorers Justin Belanger and Paddy Quinn in the lineup. You can be sure Northwest will be looking for a little payback the next time these teams meet again on June 4th.

The Sackville Wolves headed to enemy territory on Thursday night in the ECJLL Game of the Week against Dartmouth. Looking to build off their success from last game, the Wolves knew they needed to stay out of the box and play their game if they were to have a chance. On the other hand, the Bandits looked to erase the memory of their 14-8 shellacking and make a statement to the league by defeating their long-time rival. And a statement they made. Right from the opening faceoff, Dartmouth’s Ian McShane sliced and diced through the short-staffed Sackville defence, tallying a whopping 10 points (8G, 2A) as the Bandits trounced the Wolves 17-9. Dartmouth rookie Bobby Green had a breakout performance (2G, 3A) while goalie Harry Baker made several spectacular saves for the Bandits. Sackville snipers Robbie Grant (4G, 1A) and Cody Marche (2G, 3A) were the lone bright spots for the Wolves. Dartmouth will look to build upon this momentum into next week as it travels up to New Brunswick in a battle for first-place.

Next week’s must-see matchup

Who? Halifax Southwest vs. Dartmouth Bandits

When and Where? Thursday May 31, 7:30pm @ Bowles Arena

Why? This will be the 2nd of two games this week between the Halifax Hurricanes and the Dartmouth Bandits. Both teams have started strong and will be looking to secure 2 points in a matchup that could see one team leapfrog the other in the standings. The Hurricanes have been on a roll as of late, winning 2 of their last 3 but it was Bandits who handed the Hurricanes their only loss on the season. The question remains which Bandit-squad will show up to play? Only one way to find out! Game starts at 7:30pm.
