Hurricanes drop the Mavs in a May long weekend battle

2019-05-21

Long weekend doesn't mean a break for all ECJLL teams as the Halifax Hurricanes travelled to Moncton to take on the New Brunswick Mavericks. The game saw the return of Jake Mosher for the Mavericks but it wasn't enough as the Hurricanes dropped the Mavs

On this long weekend, Halifax Hurricanes travelled to Moncton on Saturday to take on the NB Mavericks at the Kay/Lewisville arena for the Mavericks first home game of the season. This was quite a matchup as both teams played hard and the Mavericks gave home fans something to cheer about right from the beginning of the period by scoring first at just 19 seconds into the game. Mavericks led the Hurricanes in scoring in the 1st period and ending the first 20 minutes of play with a score of 3-1.

Hurricanes came out in the 2nd period determined to not let the Mavericks get too far ahead on the scoreboard and took over the scoring in this period. Hurricanes first saw the back of the Mavericks’ net in just 40 seconds from the top of the period and put 6 points on the scoreboard. However, the Mavericks weren’t going to be left behind and with scoring 4 goals over the period, ended the 2nd in a tie game at 7-7.

The 3rd period was a very interesting one and well played by both teams. While Mavericks were held to only 1 goal as the Hurricanes scored 3 times in the period, not a single goal was scored in the last 12 minutes of the game and only 1 penalty incurred during the whole period. Hurricanes took home the win with a final score of 10-8.

Hurricanes were led in scoring by assistant captain Glen Holmes with a hat trick and 4 assists, also by assistant captain David Rossiter (2 goals) and by Jacob Abbott (2 goals, 1 assist).

Mavericks lead scorer in this game was Jake Mosher-McGraw, back from playing with the University of Tampa in NCAA D2 conference, with a hat trick and 3 assists. The remaining scoring was evenly spread out with 1 point apiece by captain Jon McGarvey, Jon Farrell, Austin Hirshfeld, Adam Gallop, and Jaden Hewey.

Up next for the NB Mavericks is showcasing the ECJLL and Jr A Lacrosse as they play in Quispamsis next weekend where they will take on the St. Margaret’s Bay Rebels on Saturday, May 25 and the Mi’kmaq Warriors on Sunday, May 26. Both games go at 2pm each day at the Quispamsis Memorial Arena. Can’t wait to see all the awesome lax fans from the Saint John region come out to cheer on these awesome teams!
