Dartmouth Bandits win in Sudden Death OT, staying alive and forcing Game 5
2018-07-27Dartmouth Bandits come back strong keeping game tied up through regulation and overtime to win in Sudden Death overtime and force the ECJLL Championship series to go to Game 5
Bandits opened the scoring for the game early and held a 2 point lead for most of the 1st period, until the Hurricanes got their 1st goal with less than 5 min...utes left, putting the lacrosse ball in the net 3 goals in 4 minutes to end the period in the lead at 3-2.
During the 2nd period, scoring was even between these two fast teams, action was happening at both ends of the floor. Each team scored 2 goals a piece during these 20 mins, ending with Hurricanes still ahead on the scoreboard at 5-4. A fire became lit under the Bandits bench as they came out in the third with a determination to stay alive and force game 5 for that chance to win the championship. Hurricanes scored first in this period, but that is all the Bandits would allow for this period, as they themselves scored 2 goals, tying up the game and as regulation time came to an end, these two teams were all tied up at 6-6.
As a championship game does not end in a tie, this game was going into overtime! Players on both benches were ready to continue to play fast and hard as they had the full 60 mins before. Again, each team was strong, and both scored 2 goals apiece in this 10 minute period, ending it in yet another tie at 8-8. The next period was a 20 minute, Sudden Death period and fans were not leaving as they cheered on their teams to encourage the win. With just 2 mins and 47 seconds into this period, Bandits put the ball in the Hurricanes net, winning the game 9-8, and forcing this series to its final game 5.
Scoring by the Bandits in this game was shared across the roster, including 3 goals made by defencemen at critical points in the game to keep their team alive. Tyson Carvery netted the winning goal for this Dartmouth team.
Hurricanes scoring was also spread over a number of players, with Stu Smeltzer netting 2, while brother and team captain Luke Smeltzer lead in assisting with 2.
Championship game, game 5, goes tomorrow night, Friday, July 27 at 7:30pm at Dartmouth 4Pad, Rink A. Will Dartmouth Bandits repeat and keep the championship or will Halifax Hurricanes become the new EJCLL champions and Garnet Knight Cup winners? These games have been epic to date and tomorrow night will be no less, so come out to cheer them on and find out first hand who our champion will be.
