Hurricanes take a wild one over the Wolves to take a 1-0 series lead
2018-07-10Regular time was not enough to decide the game between the Hurricanes and Wolves and neither was one overtime. Only 20 seconds in to the 2nd overtime did the hurricanes net the winner to take an early series lead.
Tuesday night, Sackville Wolves and Halifax Hurricanes opened up the ECJLL semi-final playoffs and all in attendance were treated to a truly exciting game, that went ended up in Sudden Death Overtime and the Hurricanes winning the 1st of this series.
The first period opened with both teams amped up and ready to play some great Jr A action. The play was fast, the ball was rarely loose on the floor and the Wolves were first to score, ending the period up 4-1 over the Hurricanes.
Hurricanes came back in the second, determined to make up the scoring deficit, adding 5 goals to their side of the scoreboard. But the Wolves played just as hard and kept their lead, with a score of 8-6 after the first 40 mins of play.
With the third period opening and a close point spread, both teams played hard, wanting that win to set the tone of the series. Both goalies allowed only 1 goal each in during this last 20 mins of regular game time. With the score tied at 9-9 after 60 mins of play, it was onto Overtime.
Overtime play had both teams ramped up and the fans along with them. Fast plays and hard defence kept the scoring at bay until the last final seconds on the clock with the Hurricanes scored with only 7 secs left. But the Wolves kept on fighting, scoring again with only 1 sec remaining and again tying up the scoreboard 10-10.
Sudden Death Overtime had fans on the edge of their seats and the players bringing everything to the floor. The energy was high and noise was loud as these teams faced off. It didn't take long in this period for the final decision as Hurricanes netted their 11th goal at just 19 secs into p'lay and winning this 1st game.
Wolves' scoring leader was Zac Carrigan with 4 goals, as Mitch Brossard had a hat trick and 2 assists.
Hurricanes' were led in scoring by Glenn Holmes who had 2 goals, one being the game winner, and 1 assist, and Luke Smeltzer who also had 2 goals.
The next playoff game will once again have these two teams playing their 2nd game of this series as they play Wed, July 11 at 7:30pm at the Sackville Rink. Do not miss this game as the Wolves will be on the prowl to tie up this series.
