Hurricanes down the Warriors on a night to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

Friday night, Mi'kmaq Warriors hosted the Halifax Hurricanes, and came together to give back to their community by honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Lacrosse is the the Creator's game and these two teams came together in the spirit of healing, that this game is meant to be for, to be bigger than sport itself and in that spirit, were able to bring more attention and awareness to those Indigenous Women and Girls who have been taken away from their loved ones all too soon. The Warriors took donations at the door which will go to the local chapter of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls which works with the families who have been effected by such loss. Both teams participated in a moving pre-game ceremony that involved youth dancers leading the teams out on the floor, youth singers and a ceremonial faceoff. The Warriors' jerseys sported a new patch to honor these women, which they will wear for the remainder of the season.

In game action, the Warriors opened the scoring in the 1st, with lots of back and forth action on the floor; however the Hurricanes closed the period with a 7-4 lead. Warriors' defence worked hard in the 2nd as they kept the Hurricanes' scoring to only 2 goals all period, with the Hurricanes turning it up in the last period to score 6. Warriors' offense also cranked it up to score 4 during this period, but alas couldn't overtake the visitors, falling 15-8.

The Hurricanes' were led by Reilly Letterick, who scored 4 goals and Luke Smeltzer who scored 2 goals and 7 assists. Warriors' Jordan Whitford led his team with 4 goals.

The Warriors would like to thank the Hurricanes for participating in this moving evening to give back to the community and would also like to thank all those who came out to this game to show their support to the community and honoring these women as well.
