Getting to Know ... Chris Burgess, Warriors

2018-03-16

Our Getting to Know…. feature section has been letting fans know more about players within our league. This time we are connecting with the Mi’kmaq Warriors Captain and transition player Chris Burgess.

In 2018, Chris will begin his final season with the Warriors, and has been a player that has been involved in some of the biggest trades in ECJLL history that have defined franchises.  Chris has been a part of three different franchises in the ECJLL and trades that have included such names as: Breton Penney, Connor Aquanno and Bryson Knockwood, all who have been ECJLL All-stars.  Chris’s commitment, dedication and work ethic makes him one of the driving forces behind the Warriors.

In 2016, Chris was named Assistant Captain of the Warriors, as he showed to be a lead for the Warriors on and off the floor.  Chris also extended his knowledge of lacrosse to not only on the floor, but to the next generation of players by coaching a minor lacrosse team.  Chris has coached in Truro minor for the past three seasons bringing excitement, passion and knowledge to the next generation of player coming up through the game.  His other work at the minor ages has helped grow not only future Warriors, but also bring lacrosse back into the spotlight in Colchester County as Truro Minor Lacrosse has found new life from top to bottom.  Chris finished the season being the 1st winner of the Terry Hunt award which is an award honoring one of the founders of Truro Minor Lacrosse.  The award is giving to the Warriors player that exemplifies outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, passion, commitment, volunteer work, and helping build the sport of lacrosse - characteristics that made Terry one of the leaders in our community.

In 2017, Chris was named the 3rd team captain in the history of the Warriors, with three key players graduating (Zach Julian, Stephen Johnson, Connor MacQuarrie) & Defensive all-star Bret Himmelman, Chris and many of the Warriors were looked to step up and lead the team in 2017.  A young squad the Warriors took a step forward as Chris led the charge out of the defensive end, but still were unable to find a win during the season.  Chris is a leader in the transition game for the Warriors and finished the season with 16 points (5 goals, 11 assists) while being named to the ECJLL 2nd team all-star.

In Chris’ final season with the Warriors he will be asked to step up even more to bring the Warriors back to the playoffs.  Chris is a role model for youth players in Colchester County and would enjoy nothing better than to bring the Warriors back to the playoffs in his final season.
