The 2016 Founders Cup Team will begin tryouts next Friday, June 3, from 830-1030pm at Bowles Arena.
This year’s tournament is an excellent opportunity to put Nova Scotia back on the map at the national level. Hosted in Orangeville, Ontario from August 15-21, this tournament is an incredible and historic venue for the best of the best in the ECJLL to put their skills on display in front of some the top lacrosse scouts in the country.
The coaching staff intends on building a new culture and core of players, with the intention of winning the Founders Cup within the next 3 years.
“A realistic goal is to repeat our bronze medal performance when we hosted the tournament back in 2014” said Head Coach Chet Koneczny, who also noted “that it will be no easy task with two Ontario teams eligible to compete at this year’s tournament.”
The try out schedule is as follows:
- Bowles Arena, June 3, 8:30-10:30pm
- Halifax Forum, June 8, 6:30-8:30pm
- Halifax Forum, June 13, 8:30-10:30pm
All 3 tryout times do not conflict with the current ECJLL game schedules and the ECJLL encourage coaches to allow their players the exception of missing practice in order to attend.
“It is important that we work together with the league to help market our players and advance them to next level in their lacrosse careers” insists Offensive Coach Jamie Dunbar.
Coach Dunbar, having had the benefit of playing 2 years of Junior A Lacrosse in Port Coquitlam, BC, seems adamant that “it ultimately benefits our collective development long term,” adding “it expands our network and also the ideas we later bring to the floor as coaches.”
Lacrosse Nova Scotia will be overseeing the try-out process until a team is picked, at which point a team manager will be named. The coaching staff is rounded out by former ECJLL standouts Harry Baker Jr. and Chris Taylor, who are serving as goalie coach & video coach respectively. Northwest Marley Lions athletic therapist Chris Clarke has also recently volunteered his services to the team and will be available at the first try-out. He commented that any players requiring taping should arrive 45 minutes early.
There is a $55 try-out fee that must be paid on-line in order to participate in the tryout process. All proceeds will pay for floor time, and any residuals will be kicked back to the team. Fundraising and team budget will be discussed further, once the team is picked. Please visit the Lacrosse Nova Scotia website to register.
“The ECJLL encourages all interested players to participate in the tryout process and to support those chosen to the team on their quest for gold,” stated ECJLL Commissioner Scott Smith.
