WEEK 2 SUMMARY
All six teams played for the first time this season in week two of the ECJLL Season, with the Mavericks providing us a stunner as they tied the Halifax Northwest Marley Lions in their season opener. Click READ MORE for Week Two details.

Four games last week in the ECJLL, with one producing a significant result. All six teams played last week, with the Halifax Northwest Marley Lions finally getting some game action in against the New Brunswick Mavericks on Saturday.
Warriors Honour a Friend
The Mi’kmaq Warriors had their home opener on Thursday night at Colchester stadium, and they took the opportunity to honour Cody Glode who took his own life early in 2016. He was a friend to many on the Warriors roster, and an inspiration to many in the community.
The Warriors, having never beaten the four-time defending ECJLL champion, put their best effort on the floor.
They conceded the victory 14-5 to the Hurricanes, with the result being their best ever in two season in the league. Rookies Jacob Boudreau and Connor Dennis both added goals for the Warriors, while team leader Billie Julian added two goals and Stephen Johnson added one. Boudreau, the fifth overall pick in the 2015 ECJLL Entry Draft, didn’t see any game action last year for the Dartmouth Bandits. An offseason trade for to the Warriors with teammate Brett Himmelman means both he and Himmelman will be seeing substantial time this season.
With the competition growing out of New Brunswick and the Mavericks adding substantial firepower this season, the Warriors will be leaning heavily on their 2016 rookie class to provide the spark they need to get back into the playoffs this season.
Same Old Hurricanes
The Halifax Southwest Hurricanes picked up where they left off in 2015 with a decisive win to start the season in Truro last Thursday, and another clean win over the New Brunswick Mavericks 12-6. Newcomers via the MUFLL Draft Sam Domachevski (1G 5A) and Brett McGuire (2G 6A) from Misssissauga and St. Catherine’s respectively provided legitimate depth for the club, and will be viable on the second and third units against the Bandits and Marley Lions when leading scorers Luke Smeltzer and Brian Huyghue return.
Rookies Will Holmes (3G 1A) and Jonah Glazebrook (2G 3A) each notched their first career ECJLL goals this week with Holmes scoring on Thursday and Glazebrook on Sunday.
Mentioned as providing a rookie impact in the Hurricanes Preview, one of Glazebrook or Holmes could end up being a legitimate rookie of the year candidate when all is said and done in 2016.
Maxwell McBride (5G 2A) carried the offence once again, with Letterick (4G 2A) and Donovan (3G 5A) shouldering the rest of the load. Overshadowed by Rookie of the Year Alex Pace and McBride, Reilly Letterick had 45 points in his second season in the ECJLL and will provide a boost to the outside shooters of the Canes playing along the crease.
Marley Lions Mishap – Mavericks Capitalize
The Marley Lions came into this season with questions after losing Captain Paddy Quinn and All-Star Gavin Quigley as overagers, and those questions were punctuated on Saturday as they nearly lost to the New Brunswick Mavericks if not for a final minute goal by Chris Walker to tie the game 12-12.
With Walker and 2015’s leading scorer John MacDonald picking up the pieces after the departure of Quinn and Quigley, previous roles players will need to play important roles if the Marley Lions are to contend for the championship for a third straight year. Thomas Sangster (2G 1A) and Clark Hannam (1G 1A) will need to be more involved on the offensive side of the ball after combining for 64 points a year ago.
Justin Misener and Jerome Glowacki, the heirs apparent on the right side after the departure of Quigley and Quinn, were not suited up for the Lions season opener. This provided an opportunity for first round rookies from the 2016 ECJLL Draft Mark Seward (2G) and Matt Wilson (1G 1A) step in and provide some scoring depth. Their names will be called often this season and will challenge the other rookies for all-star consideration.
The tie comes as a boon the Mavericks, who came close against the Southwest Hurricnaes a year ago but didn’t end up in the 2015 playoffs. The Mavericks trailed 3-0, 7-4, and 11-9 in this one and were able to come back each time. Not helping their cause, the Marley Lions had 28 minutes in penalties at seemingly crucial points in the game.
Andrew Neilson (5G 3A) and Jack Boyle (4G 7A) shouldered the load for the Mavericks, scoring a combined 16 points (8G 8A) in the tie. With Neilson not available for Sunday’s game, and the Mavericks resting their starting goaltender, the Mavericks conceded a 12-6 victory to the Halifax Southwest Hurricanes.
After two extremely tight contests with the Dartmouth Bandits and Sackville Sportwheels Wolves on ECJLL Opening Weekend, the Mavericks are now the most intriguing team to follow heading into the rest of the season. What they do could have far-reaching implications with regards to the four-team ECJLL playoffs in July.
