Bandits Clinch Two Key Victories

The Dartmouth Bandits score two key victories in what was an eventful first weekend in the ECJLL.

Kicking the season off in style with a bang, the Bandits excelled on both ends of the floor. Backed by youngster Ayden Pierro, the Bandits took a commanding 7-0 lead five minutes into the second frame.

Mi’kmaq scored two quick powerplay goals, the second by 2nd overall ECJLL Draft selection Connor Dennis, but that’s as close as they would get. Dartmouth pounded Mi’kmaq for nine more goals in the game. Justin Graham played exceptional in this one, notching seven points in the victory.

The Dartmouth Bandits first pick in the ECJLL Entry Draft came in the third round, 13th overall, but it didn’t take him long to make an impact. Lewis Jarvie added two assists in the game.

Despite the blowout on Friday, the Bandits couldn’t produce a similar result on Sunday in Moncton. Without star player and 2015 goal scoring champ Trey Carvery and leader Graham, the Bandits struggled to generate offence.

After an even first, Dartmouth and New Brunswick exchanged goal streaks, while a checking from behind penalty may have led to two fights towards the end of the third period, and an instigator penalty for Adam Connor.

At one point trailing 9-3, the Mavericks stormed back, but the Bandits were simply too much on this day.

After losing by three goals twice in 2015, the Mavericks came one step closer to clinching a crucial moral victory over the Bandits that would put favour them well in the standings when the four-team playoff field is decided. Mark June 18th and June 26th on your calendar, as these two clubs are generating significant rivalry buzz heading into the remainder of the season, and may see themselves squaring off in the Garnet Knight Cup playoffs.

Wolves Sneak out of New Brunswick with a Win

With much hype generated from a solid performance in the ECJLL Spring Jam last weekend, the Sackville Sportwheels Wolves came away with a key victory in an important game to start the season.

After getting up 5-0 early in the second period, the wheels fell off for the Wolves, being outscored 8-5 in the final two periods. Thankfully Mitchell Battiste, last year’s 2nd overall pick in the ECJLL Entry Draft, secured the victory by scoring with roughly five minutes remaining in the game.

Connor Aquanno picked up where he left off in 2015, notching 5 pts (1G 4A) and diligently calling the shots on the offensive side of the ball. Top 5 picks in this year’s ECJLL Entry Draft Mike Anthony and Mitchell Broussard both scored their first goals in a Wolves uniform, and leader Ryan Arsenault stepped up with three points.

Disappointment for Mavericks

Having lost two games by a combined three goals is never an easy pill to swallow. This weekend mirrors a similar result to 2015 where the Mavericks lost by a combined five goals to the Mi’kmaq Warriors and Sackville Wolves. But considering the woes the Mavericks have had in recent years, there are signs of improvement, and much of this can be attributed to newcomers Andrew Nielson and Taran Cooke.

Nielson played on Team Canada over this past summer for the U17 team, and Cooke was named Bishop’s University ROY for lacrosse. Both played well during opening weekend for the Mavericks, and keep an eye on them as the season progresses.
