Ingraham and Grant acquires by separate clubs to push for a championship in 2015

2015-06-25

Robbie Grant has been trade to the Lions. Bruce Ingraham has been traded to the Bandits. Two BIG trades that could affect the chase for the Garnet Knight Cup in 2015. READ MORE for a recap.

It’s no secret that any team looks for ways to improve their club heading into a championship run. After meddling moves throughout the course of the season, the Marley Lions and Dartmouth Bandits finally pulled the trigger on a pair of influential deals heading into the ECJLL Garnet Knight Cup run.

Dartmouth Bandits acquire Bruce Ingraham from Mi’kmaq Warriors for future considerations.

Though the terms of this deal are vague, the impulse behind this deal indicates that the Bandits are all in on the 2015 season. Coach Mitch Hannigan will be leaving to pursue his education in Ontario following this season, and it’s evident that there is a win-now mentality in the dressing room.

This mentality was even more apparent when the Bandits lost a pair of games to rival Southwest, and had close wins against the Moncton Mavericks and Sackville Wolves.

The team had taken a bit of a downturn on defence and in nets with the departure of Jonathan Boutin, but noone was prepared for just how far that slide will be. The Bandits have two very capable young goaltenders in Brett McKinnon and Ayden Pierro, but adding 5th year goaltender Bruce Ingraham makes the team that much more capable on the back end.

Bruce was integral in the limited success the Warriors experienced in their inaugural season, facing a barrage seemingly every game. His addition puts the Bandits back in to the title conversation, admittedly after weeks of questions on where they stood.

A 19-5 drumming at the hand of the Southwest Hurricanes may have been the tipping point for coach Mitch Hannigan. His ejection from that game, more than likely to deflect criticism from the teams poor play, might have been the final push to get a deal done.

For the Warriors, one can assume they received a mid-round draft pick for Ingraham’s services, which will help with their team-build long term.

Northwest Marley Lions trade rights to Ryan Anthony, Ben Leger, and two conditional MMLL draft picks (2016 1st and 2017 2nd) to the Sackville Sportwheels Wolves for Robbie Grant.

The Lions suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Southwest Hurricanes 8-6, after conceding three goals in the final five minutes. This may have rang alarm bells for head coach Tyler James, as the Lions were swept last year in the 2014 ECJLL finals at the hands of the Hurricanes.

So what did the Lions do about it? They acquired 5th year player Robbie Grant from the rebuilding Wolves in exchange for some solid draft picks and young players. Robbie has 16 points (7G 9A) in seven games played for the Wolves and should see his PPG increase playing in the Lions offence.

The missing link in the Lions offence all season has been their capability to score from the outside, something that has hurt them on the defensive side at times throughout 2015. Grant gives them an outside shooter and a physical player on offence who has the ability to get inside on tougher defensive matchups.

For the rebuilding Wolves, this was a trade that they had to jump on. The conditional first round pick as well as a second in 2017 gives them a consistent stream of talent to grow their base moving forward.
