2015 ECJLL draft saw many big-name provincial players find new homes. The Sackville Wolves were the biggest movers in the first round picking up 3 picks, looking to add to a good core of young players either in Junior or a year away.

The expansion Mi’kmaq Warriors traded their first overall pick to the Wolves in exchange for rights to key players looking to return home to play. The Dartmouth Bandits picked up a first round selection from South West in a deal that sent a 1st round MUFLL pick to SW, after letting go of their first round pick in a previous trade.

Being the beneficiary of Dartmouth’s first round pick as well, The Sackville Wolves controlled the outcome of most of the first round.

Here is a summary of the first round selections from the 2015 ECJLL midget entry draft.

1. Connor Aquanno – Sackville Wolves (Bedford Rock)

Connor had a very strong 2104 season being named captain of Midget Provincial box and U16 Provincial field teams along with his Bedford Rock Midget Select team.  He also lead the MMLL Midget Select Division in points recording 56 (19 goals, 37 assists).

Connor is a left-handed play marker, which is increasingly valuable in the ECJLL, and will become the new face of the Wolves franchise.

2. Mitchell Battiste – Sackville Wolves (Bedford Rock)

Mitchel will join his former teammate Connor Aquanno on the Wolves in the 2015 season.  Mitchell was 6th on his team in scoring with 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists).  Mitchell was also a member for the 2015 Provincial Midget box lacrosse team, which traveled to BC last year to play at the Canadian Nationals.  The Midget team had their highest finish in Nova Scotia history winning a bronze medal at the games. Mitchell is a big body to complement Aquanno’s play-making ability and should contribute immediately at the Junior level.

3. Johnny Foley – Sackville Wolves (St. Margarets Bay Storm)

Johnny was the first selection from the St. Margarets Bay Storm Association.  Johnny finished 5th in scoring for the Storm last season with 14 points (12 goals, 2 assists). Coming from a hockey background, his hard-nosed play will serve the Wolves well going into the 2015 season.

Sackville Wolves coach Jay Titchmarsh had this to say about these selections in the first round: “The Wolves organization was very excited to have the first 3 picks in the 2015 draft and we believe we set up our organization for the future.”

4. Alex Mitchell – HNW Marley Lions (Bedford Rock)

Mitchell was the only goalie in this year ECJLL draft and quite highly rated.  Alex along with teammates Connor and Mitchell played for the Bedford Rock where he recorded a 5.17 GAA for the season. He was named to the Provincial Midget box lacrosse team. A classic stay-at-home goaltender, his skills are well suited to the ECJLL style of play.

Assistant Coach Colin Beiswanger had this to say about Alex: “Alex was #1 on our draft board.  We have really strong depth at the position, with two very good upper-year guys and a couple solid younger players, but with the way we saw the first few picks unfolding we thought we could land Alex.  We’re really happy getting Alex at fourth overall with his experience and attitude.  We had a chance to speak with him and his father after the draft, and you could see the enthusiasm, toward us and the team.”

5. Jacob Boudreau – Dartmouth Bandits (St. Margarets Bay Storm)

Bandits Head Coach Mitch Hannigan knows Jacob well after coaching him on the Nova Scotia Provincial U16 team this past summer. Jacob was 4thin scoring on his St. Margarets Bay storm team with 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists).  Jacob is a left handed offensive player that fills a void on the bandits left side. Securing left-handed talent was a theme of the first round.

Coach Mitch Hannigan commented on getting Jacob, “Jacob is a tenacious player that encompasses what coaches look for, hard work, skillful, and coachable.  We are very happy to have him in the bandits organization and feel he can be a big part of our future.”

All of these players have the capability to play immediately going into the 2015 season. After a disappointing last place finish in 2014, look for the wolves picks to see the most playing time and provide an instant impact.
