Cole Davis to Southwest as the Lions load up on draft picks

February started off with a bang in the ECJLL with star players and high draft picks switching team and the month ended on the same note.  Three weeks after the Halifax North West Marley Lions picked up three 1st round picks, they were at it again but this ‎with Halifax Southwest Hurricanes.

The Marley Lions sent star draw man Cole Davis, 2015 1st round MUFLL pick and 2015 3rd round pick to the Hurricanes for 2016, 2017, 2018 1st round picks and Riley Ambrose.  Riley and Cole are former teammates on the Nova Scotia Midget Provincial Team and the 2013 Northwest Rebels Midget Select team, which finished a perfect 21-0.

Cole brings strength in the face-off circle, which he has showed from being named a 2014 nationals all-star team as a draw man.  Role players such as draw men have been a big part of Hurricanes three straight ECJLL Championships.  In 2014, Cole only played 2 games for the Lions due to a knee injury but expects to be back to full strength for the start ‎2015 season. Hurricanes head coach Jon Goguen had this to say after acquiring Cole "Both players involved in the trade have very high potential and incredible attitudes so both teams in this trade win. One key factor in the exchange is Cole's ability to take draws, which we would hope to utilize after graduating an invaluable role player in Louis Martin. "

Over the past month, the Marley Lions have ‎picked up six 1st round draft picks giving them a total of nine 1st round draft picks over the next four years. Not only does this strengthen the future of the Marley Lions but in the process booster their roster with youth from Jed and Riley. Assistant coach Colin Beiswanger commented on the teams goals during the off-season " "Our goal this winter was future continuity without sacrificing our current level of play. We’ve acquired two players familiar to us in the coaching staff, and six first round picks over the next three years. We have ensured we will compete in 2015 with a solid offensive core and two-way play, and will be well positioned to develop talent in future entry drafts."

The ECJLL Midget Entry Draft is slated for Saturday March the 7th, which still gives teams time to make moves to improve their rosters.  The ECJLL combine could prove to bring out some last minute deals before on draft day as all coaches will get one last chance to evaluate the up coming stars of the league.
